Confusingly there are two types of billion.

Long and short. In Britain, a billion used to be a million million 1012 whilst in the US a billion was a thousand million 109. (Probably so there could be more billionaires). Since globalisation, the short form has become the standard, so there are 9 zeros in a billion.
