How to Repair Silk Fabric?
At one time or another, we all experience wear and tear on our clothing or fabric-made home decor. As a result, it can be very helpful to learn the basics of fabric repair so that you will not have to continually replace expensive items. One of the most expensive and delicate fabrics you may own is silk. Silk fabric is made from natural fibers that are found in the cocoon of the silk worm. Silk fabrics are extremely volatile and must be treated with gentleness. Silk fabric will degrade and become damaged very quickly when exposed to acidity and harmful chemicals. Silk will even deteriorate eventually from time spent with exposure to too much light. This delicate fabric can be difficult to repair, and the evidence of the repair will usually be visible. If you have silk fabric with a hole or tear, you can try to patch the area with fusible fabric. To do this, measure the area and obtain a piece of fusible fabric that is 1/2 an inch wider and longer than the area that needs repair. You will then need to cut off any jagged edges found around the tear and place the silk inside out on an ironing board. Next, pull the edges of the tear as close as possible and center the patch over the rip with its adhesive side against the fabric. Finally, apply the patch as per the manufacturer's instructions. If you have a piece of silk with a discoloration, you can treat it with vinegar to lessen the damage. To do this, place the silk fabric in a container and fill it with cold water. Next, add the amount of detergent typically recommended for washing delicates and gently wash the silk by hand with a kneading motion. Rinse the silk until all residue of detergent is removed. Then fill the container again with cold water and add 1/2 cup of vinegar. Place the silk in the solution and rinse it. Silk is a very delicate material that must be handled with care. Whatever repairs you do with silk, you should never be rough or use anything abrasive. Also, you should never use bleach on silk as it will destroy the fibers.
