vaguely know only that you need to "work it out". You have to know that

you're looking for the definite value for 'w' that makes the equation a true

statement. Here's how to find it:

5 (4 + w) = 10

Eliminate parentheses on the left side:

20 + 5w = 10

Subtract 20 from each side:

5w = -10

Divide each side by 5:

w = -2

That's the number that 'w' must be. If 'w' is not -2, then

5(4 + w) is not equal to 10.
