After WW2

- The agricultural production in France had fallen of more than a third from 1938 to 1945, causing penury, resuppling problems and black market trading.

- The manufacturing production had collapsed, in the same time, of more than an half. Moreover, the transports infrastructures had been largely damaged.

- The national budget decifit had increased causing a rising up of the inflation (prices had been multiplied by four to five during German occupation.

The Marshall Plan and a deep reform of the French economy (nationalization of banks, car-builders, energy companies, transport companies...) allowed the country to rebuild. Huge investments, based on the Keynes' principles, drove the ecomony into a vitual circle.

This period of extraordinary wealth (les trente glorieuses - the glorious thirties) lasted thirty years until 1974 and the first oil crisis.

It was a wreck. Italy at first sided with Germany and was involved in much fighting. When Italy turn coated and joined the Allies in 1943, that meant the nation was immediately turned into a battlefield. The rugged mountainous terrain was ideal for a defensive battle, which the Germans skillfully used. Despite overwhelming American/British/Italian firepower, air cover, and naval forces the Germans held on for over two years. When the fighting finally ended in mid 1945, Italy was a disaster. Cities were ruined. Railroads destroyed. Despite joining the Allies, the Italian overseas empire was stripped. Their navy had been lost. The currency was debased. The people were impoverished. Nonetheless, Italy had been spared the worst that WWII had to offer: Soviet occupation. With some aid from the west, Italy began a fairly quick recovery. Despite inroads, Communism never took hold. The nation was rebuilt. The northern areas in particular, using plentiful agricultural and hydroelectric resources, rebuilt. The garment industry flourished. Later this area also excelled in high tech. Today Italy has recovered, although the southern half of the country is relatively poor compared to the north, due to crime gangs that have long dominated the region.

This website is about the economy after 1945. Check it out!! http://economics.about.com/od/useconomichistory/a/post_war.htm Much better than during the Great Depression. The country mobilized for war which included converting industry to war production. Increased participation of women in the work force to replace the GIs who were fighting and rationing of items was also common to feed the war effort. The US was called the 'arsenal of democracy'
