It is the abbreviation for millimetre which is 1/1000 of a metre.

You are a bit confused here. There is no such thing as 1 metric. Metric is the name of the system of measurement that is a decimalised system of measurement. 1Kilometre = 1000metres 1 Kilogram = 1000 grams 1 Square metre = 1000cubic decimetres etc

They are the units of measurement for mass and distance. They can take on standard prefices of the metric system which will result in multiplication or division of these units by powers of ten. For example, kilo = *1000 so that a kilogram = 1000 grams and a kilometre = 1000 metres. Or, micro = 1 millionth so that 1 microgram = 1 millionth of a gram and a micrometre = 1 millionth of a metre.

M=1000 eg: 2009 =MM1X this for Roman Numerals Metric system 1000Meters =1 kilometer

The metric system has a base of ten (for example there are 10 mm in 1 cm, 100 cm in 1 m, 1000 m in 1 km) whereas the English system isn't (12 inches in a foot, 3 feet in a yard and 5280 feet in a mile) so there aren't a bunch of arbitrary conversions to remember in the metric system
