You should not only know the correct answer, but how to obtain it yourself.

In order to compare fractions, you should find a common denominator, and convert both fractions. The bottom number of a fraction is the denominator, which is the total number of parts in the whole (the total number of pieces the whole has been divided into). The top number is the numerator, which is the number of pieces of the whole that you have.

A Pizza cut into 6 equal slices, takes 6 pieces to make up the whole pizza (6/6)

A pizza cut into 8 equal slices, takes 8 pieces to make up the whole pizza (8/8)

Multiples of 6 include: 2, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, 54, 60 . . .

Multiples of 8 include: 8, 16, 24, 32, 40, 48, 56, 64, 72, 80 . . .

The lowest common number in those two lines of multiples is 24.

This is like re-cutting the pizza into 24 equal slices.

The number 24 becomes the common denominator in both new fractions, however whatever number you multiply 6, and 8 by to get 24, you must also multiply the numerator by that same number.

For the denominator 6: 6 x 4 = 24, thus, for the numerator: 3 x 4 = 12

3 x 4 = 12

6 x 4 = 24

3/6 = 12/24

For the denominator 8: 8 x 3 = 24, thus for the numerator: 3 x 3 = 9

3 x 3 = 9

8 x 3 = 24

3/8 = 9/24

Answer:

12/24 > 9/24 (twelve twenty-fourths is greater than nine twenty-fourths)

or

3/6 > 3/8 (3 over 6 is greater than 3 over 8)
