It depends on the breeding of the mutt. And how they are trained. Our four year old wolf/dalmation/bull mastiff/huskie mix is very well trained. He's very much a protector though. He tends to howl at the sirens, but telling him to quiet it down and he'll just whine. He sheds a lot but that's because of the huskie and wolf in him. Mutts or mixed breed dogs tend to be well behaved and have less chances of health difficulties. This is because of less chances of being inbred, like most pure bred dogs. Because Mutts/mixed breed dogs are not bred for certain qualities, just for companionship, they tend to be kind and protective, especially if the breeds put in to them (if known at all) are protectors, like the bull mastiff and wolf are. Although the dalmation is not an aggressive dog, they tend not to do well with young children, which is why I was fairly surprised with how he acted around the 2 year old I was watching, he let the kid tug on his tail, fur, ears, and around his mouth, when he finally did get sick of it, he just nudged the kid off. Of course, kids come back, and this one did, and the kid plopped on him, he got up, and very carefully laid on him. My dog is quite well tempered, but he has been trained well. He's a very beautiful dog, and quite large. This is not speaking on behalf of all mixed breeds, but from my experience with them they are well behaved, protective, easy to train, and have very few health problems. So next time you think about getting a family dog, don't go to some fancy breeder, rescue an animal from the shelter, watching out for any warnings they have put up of course. You never know, you might find your perfect mutt, instead of some fancy pure bred that everyone wants
