In the 18th century, Johann Heinrich Lambert was the first to prove that pi is an irrational number. However, his proof requires some pretty heavy-duty mathematics. In the 19th century Charles Hermite found a proof which is simpler but still requires requires knowledge of fairly advanced calculus. If you are up to it, then see //en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proof_that_π_is_irrational#Hermite.27s_proof

Is number 1 divided 3 a rational number?

It is. A rational number is either an integer or a recurring decimal. An irrational number would be the square root of 2. There are also complex numbers that aren't rational or irrrational.

Is 89 over 1 rational or irrrational?

Any number that can make a fraction with whole numbers on top and bottom is rational. 89 is a whole number, and so is ' 1 ', so it looks like you've nicely succeeded in defining a rational number.

Why is pi a rational number?

Pi is irrational.

Why the area of a circle with a rational radius must be an irrational number?

It the radius is r then the area is pi*r*r - which is pi times a rational number. pi is an irrational number, so the multiple of pi and a rational number is irrational.

What irrational number can be added to pi to get a sum that is rational?

Minus pi. Or minus pi plus any rational number. Here is how you can figure this out (call your unknown number "x", and let "r" stand for any rational number):x + pi = r To solve for "x", simply subtract pi from both sides. That gives you: x = r - pi

Is -2.2 rational?

No 22*pi is not a rational number

Is pi 12 equal to a rational number?
