I guess it would be infinite, since size is infinite, the boxes could all be one millimetre in size or they could be a meter in size.

If n= side number then (n-0)2 + (n-1)2 + (n-2)2 + (n-3)2...(n-t)2 = number of total squares.

So, for example, if you have a 3X3 square, then to see the total number of squares (beyond just the area--we're talking different sizes of squares), then you'd do:

(3-0)2 + (3-1)2 + (3-2)2 + (3-3)2 = (3)2 + (2)2 + (1)2 = 9+4+1 = 14 total squares.

Essentially, this is just a summation.
