You can use the New Venture Gear 4500 ( mw3 ) to replace the 3500 ( mg5 )The 4500 was the same except for the first couple years when it had a lower granny gear (6.32 compared to 5.72 in the newer versions). You will need a bellhousing, but the smaller clutch you have in the 3500 should work. It will bolt up, you can even reuse the transfer case. The crossmember will stay in the same place. you will already have the hydraulic clutch setup but you will need the 4500 slave and master cylinder.

I'm answering my own question here. I put the 1995 tranny on the 1996 and it works just fine. I just had to put an electronic piece from the 1996 tranny onto the 1995 tranny in order to get the wiring to work. Easy...and the car runs perfect on the 1995 tranny.
