They keep records
One way is to tag animals. For example, say you tag 100 bison. Later you find 10 bison that are tagged in a herd of 100. You now know that there are about 10 tagged bison for every 100 total bison. If you tagged 100 bison you would have a bison population of 1000. (100 total tagged x 10 in a tagged in a herd)
There are a couple of ways an ecologist can determine the size of a population without counting every organism. This can be done by either sampling, mark-and-recapture studies, or indirect or direct observation.
There are many ways, it depends on the species being studied. Most methods would use a representative, random sample of the population.
For plants or small, slow-moving animals this can be done using a quadrat, which allows an Ecologist to isolate a small area of a habitat and then count the number of individuals inside that small area. To get an estimate of the total population, multiply the population of the quadrat by the size of the total habitat.
For larger or more elusive animals, such as Tigers, ecologists can count footprints (pug marks.) Like a human's fingerprints, pug marks can be used to identify an individual. By counting the unique pug marks in a habitat, the ecologist can estimate the population.
They use a meter and they have setup lines around the wildlife the line is called the numberometer it can measure the population of animals inside the lines.

Actually census' are the most accurate estimation (including the estimation of homeless, illegals, etc.)
Very effective methods of fishing, which remove a large portion of a specific species all in the same go, can upset the ecosystem.
No
Scientists first create an hypothesis. They develop methods to prove their hypothesis. In order for other scientists to replicate the findings and prove or disprove another scientist's outcome, the original scientist MUST describe the methods used and the findings.

It would be false to say environmental scientists are unconcerned with methods to preserve natural resources. Persevering natural resources is a priority among many environmental scientists.
Because it is possible- if you don't need a step skip it.
