Leap Years occur because the Earth does not orbit the Sun in exactly 365 days; the Earth orbits the Sun in 365.24 days. So every 4th year is a leap year in the Gregorian calendar, when an extra day - February 29 - is added to the calendar.

There are two exceptions to the "every 4 years" rule.

1. Century years that are divisible by 100 are NOT leap years, UNLESS

2. the century year is divisible by 400.

So, from 1900 to 2012, every 4th year was a leap year EXCEPT 1900. 1900 was not a leap year, and 2100 won't be. But 2000 was a leap year, because 2000 can be evenly divided by 400.

The Gregorian calendar will be accurate enough for anyone alive today but it is going to need a correction in the future. The above rules would be accurate if the orbit was exactly 365.2425. The actual orbit is 365.242199. Thus approximately every 3,200 years, in conjunction with rule 2 above, we will need to skip the planned leap day.

A leap year occurs every 4 years when divisible by 4; except when divisible by 100 it is not; except if divisible by400 it is.

So 1800 and 1900 were not leap years; but 1804, 1808, and every four years up to 1928 were leap years

Will 2012 be a leap year and was 2000 a leap year?

2012 is a leap year.2000 was a leap year, and so were 2004 and 2008. Leap years will fall in almost every year that is evenly divisible by 4.The exception is for years that end in "00" (1900, 2000, 2100). These will not be leap years unless, like 2000, they are also evenly divisible by 400.

How many leap years have occurred since 2004?

4, because there is one every four years and there was one in 2008. So there has been one in 1996, 2000, 2004, and 2008 have been leap years. In general, a year is a leap year if it is evenly divisible by 4. Most people also remember the exception which is a year is not a leap year if it ends in "00" (ie., the year is even divisable by 100). So years like 1972, 1980, and 1996 are leap years, but 1800 and 1900 are not. So why then is a 2000 a leap year? What many folks do not realize is that the 100 year exception itself has an exception. Years that are evenly divisable by 400 are leap years. So 2000 as well as 2400 will be leap years.
