Best Answer
  • In countries that use the long scale (based on powers of a million) as used in Europe - one million:
1 billion = 1012

⇒ 1 billion ÷ 1 million = 1012 ÷ 106

= 106

  • In countries that use the short scale (based on powers of a thousand) as used in USA - one thousand:
1 billion = 109

⇒ 1 billion ÷ 1 million = 109 ÷ 106

= 103

One million is 1,000,000 [one thousand thousand] in USA but in Britain it is one million million. However these days the British often also use the American number

* * * * *

Even the British are not that stupid! To have a million millions in one million? Oh, my head hurts just thinking about that.

Also, I like "these days". The British formally adopted the short scale way back in the middle 1960s - around half a century ago. How old is the person who gave the first answer?
