Problem Solving!
Tragically there are just too many moments in our lives when, facing a problem, we lack the courage to confront it and "go through it." I had a sign in my office that stated that "the only way out of a problem is through it." Sadly we often deny that a problem even exists. "Man is the only animal for whom his own existence is a problem which he has to solve," writes Erich Fromm the famous psychologist.
The first thing you need to do is to "define" the problem. State in no uncertain terms, why you feel the problem exists and why you feel it needs to be solved. If the problem is about money and spending - and most of today's problems are about spending - you must insist on bringing income and spending into balance. This can be done by establishing a budget. (I like to see a 10% cushion for unforseen eventualities.)
Next, you need to propose a solution. In most instances, your solution will find an objection by others who are involved in your life. This is when you have to arrive at a compromise that will satisfy both the other party and you. This is what I call the "Tit for Tat" solution, I will do this if you will do that, because you will need two people to agree to it.
Of course, if the problem that needs solving does not affect anybody but yourself, you need to weigh the pros and cons of your decision in terms of its effect in both short and long terms. I find it helpful, once you have made a decision, to wait at least three day before implementing it.
