The answer depends on what information you have and what level of mathematics you have reached.

If you have three sides, a, b and c, then let s = (a + b + c)/2 Area = sqrt[s*(s - a)*(s - b)*(s - c)]

Two sides and included angle, a, b and C Area = 1/2*a*b*sin(C)

Two sides and non-included angle, a, b and A (or B) use the sine rule to find the angle opposite the other known side. Use the sum of the angles of the triangle to find the included angle. Then as in previous case.

One side and two angles, a, B and C Since the sum of the angles is 180 you effectively know all 3 angles. Use the sine rule to work out another side and then use the rule for a, b and C.

Equilateral triangle, sides a then Area = [sqrt(3)*a^2]/4

Base, b and height, h: Area = 1/2*b*h

There are other formulae.

|ab|=4 |ac|=5 |bc|=4Let |ab| be the bottom line and draw a line measuring 4cm. Then use your compass and measure on a ruler 5cm. Put your compass on a and draw an arc. Then put your compass at b n mark off 4cm. Wherever these 2arcs meet join them to the bottom line |ab|. Your triangle is now finished.=]

Depending on the figure and the information you have, you can find the height and base of a triangle in many different ways. These include Pythagoras' Theorem (a2+b2=c2) and Trigonometry (sinx=opposite/hypotenuse, tanx=opposite/adjacent, cosx= adjacent/hypotenuse)

You must have some data regarding the measurements of the triangle in order to calculate the base and the height. Lacking any data, the only way to find them is to measure them.
