There are many different reasons for testing computer systems.
- If you are having problems with the system:
If it's not something obvious like a CD-ROM doesn't spin etc... you'll have to test the system to figure out what went bad. Sometimes software can cause the network card to stop working or it could be a bad network card.
- Benchmarking:
This has todo with the speed of your system. Very important for gamers. By running test and then making certain adjustments you can make your system preform better.
- Compatibility:
This is done to make sure a part (CD-ROM, DVD, Memory, Hard drive, USB device etc...) will work correctly with many configurations. Some of these tests can last weeks at a time. Sometimes you can go buy a new part and it will not work with your system. This doesn't happen much, but it does happen.
Then there's software. sometimes software can cause issues or even present an issue that looks like something else. A bad driver can make a network card to stop working, an installed program may cause another program to stop working.
- Preventive Maintience:
Sometimes running test will let you know when something isn't working well, like the harddrive is showing more and more bad sectors. That just may give you enough time to backup you drive and replace it before you lose all your data.
