To solve this with algebra, make equations: x-y=70 AND x+y=180. Now you get the x's by themselves: x=70+y AND x=180-y. Now you add the two equations together and you get 2x=250 (the positive y and negative y cancel each other out). Now it's easy to solve for x... x=125.
