As we look back to that period in history we seem to think that the Revolutionary soldier's thoughts were always patriotic, but in reality if you read their letters most of the time they were thinking about food, drink, mud, lice, and sex. Much of how we think about that time and why they fought is myth. The Betsy Ross story comes from her grandson to make himself seem more important. Longfellow's poem was published in 1861 to impress the north on the eve of the civil war. The idea of taxes as a cause is not so truthful. It turns out that they just didn't like paying taxes and that is natural. It didn't matter that the army needed it as they fought. One army colonel wrote, " my cowardly countrymen who flinch at the very time when exertions are wanted, and hold their purse strings as tho they would damn the world. Rather than part with a dollar to their army."' It is estimated that up to a 1/3 of the soldiers deserted. Some went home, some joined the state militias, but many just got tired of war. So, the reasons they fought vary and are many.
