First you have to compare the whole numbers. When the whole numbers are the same, compare the fractions. If the denominators of the fraction are the same, compare the numerators. If the denominators are different, convert them to have the least common denominators. Then compare the numerators.

Mixed numbers are a mix of a whole number (an integer) and a fraction.

They are written in a string - the whole number, then the fraction following.

Here is an example.

4 2/3 This means a number between 4 and 5 pronounced "four and two thirds".

I cannot show, with the limited text editor provided here, that the 2/3 is sometimes written as a 2 over a bar with the 3 under the bar.

Sometimes mixed numbers are written in a form which requires simplification or reduction.

For example,

2 8/3 is pronounced "two and eight thirds", but it NOT a number between 2 and three. It is actually the same number as 4 2/3 because the 8/3 can be expressed as 2 2/3, and 2+2+2/3 = 4 2/3, the simplest form.
