Body builders typically include high protein supplements in their diet to boost muscle mass. Because they are also taking a lot of exercise, this balances things. Only if you take a lot of protein and don't exercise, can an excess be detrimental. And protein very quickly changes muscle to fat with too little exercise (look at pictures of Arnie now to see what I mean) A high amount of protein produces ketones which make the kidneys work harder and, if you sweat a lot during exercise - that can lead to dehydration - a further compromise to the kidneys and heart if taken to excess. So as long as you are eating a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables along with the protein and as long as you are drinking adequate amounts of water, (at least 8 glasses a day when you're not exercising, twice that if you are) high protein shouldn't be a problem. Remember protein supps produce energy, if you're not using that energy in exercise, you'll simply put on weight - which some people wish to do. Normal protein levels in a balanced diet for an adult man can be represented by: meat - a piece the size of the palm of your hand at each meal. Fish, a piece the size of your hand. Cheese: depends of type - high fat cheese - half the palm of the hand. Vegetable servings: 4 tablespoons in potato or rice or pasta, or 3 slices of bread, 2 tbs of at least two other vegetables per meal. Keep a sipper bottle of water with you at all times, it's easier than remembering to go to the tap with a glass every hour or so. This will keep your kidneys in good condition. Remember to reduce the protein supplement if you reduce your exercise levels.
