The most commonly used ranking system is the U.S. News and World Reports. Yale is nearly always ranked as the #1 law school. Harvard and Stamford place second and third, although they switch positions from year to year so there is probably no qualitative difference between the two. Likewise, NYU and Columbia have historically jockeyed for 4th and 5th place, but this year the University of Chicago beat out NYU and is ranked 5th behind Columbia. Ergo, all three are top-notch law schools where one can not only get a quality education, but also be favored by many in charge of legal hiring.
The legal world is notoriously elitist, and going to Yale instead of Harvard could indeed make a difference in your career. That being said, all law schools in the top tier will provide a good legal education. Although they are not as competitive as the top 6 in the job marketplace, they are usually excellent choices if you're not interested in being at a prestigious firm. That being said, the current hiring market is competitive even for those who go to a top school, so think carefully about what kind of career you want before choosing to attend.
