A Prime number has exactly two factors, 1 and the number itself. You should find no other factors of a prime number.

A composite number has *more* than two factors.

Examples of prime numbers:

2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29, 31

Examples of composite numbers:

4, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 14, 15, 16, 18, 20, 21, 22, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 30, 32, 33

Numbers that are neither prime nor composite:

0, 1

To test if a number is prime or not, try to find another number that divides it. For example, if I gave you 77... you should find that it is divisible by 7.

7 x 11 = 77

So 77 is not prime, it is COMPOSITE.

But if I gave you 37, you can't find any other number (besides 1 and 37), that will divide into it evenly.

So 37 is PRIME.

And remember that 0 and 1 are exceptions. They aren't considered prime or composite.
