How did slavery in the southern colonies differ from the northern coliny?

A key difference was their organisational structure. The French instituted a very centralised system, where laws passed in Paris contolled the colonies. The British on the other hand insituted a less authoritarian, decentralised system, where a given colony would be allowed a certain degree of discretion to act.

The Southern colonies were dominated by agriculture, with tobacco being grown in the Chesapeake Region and rice and indigo further south. These large plantations required many workers so slavery was used much more in the Southern colonies. The North was agricultural as well, but had some industry with ship building, rum running, iron works, and trade. Thus, not as many slaves were needed there. So because of the different environments of the North and South, more slaves were need in the Southern colonies than in the Northern.
