draw a right angled triangle and label the longest side (the one opposite the right angle) as "c". then label the other two as "a" and "b". now a squared plus b squared equals c squared. this means that if you square the lengths of sides a and b, the answer is the length of side c squared. so if you don't know the length of one of the sides of a right angled triangle, you can work it out from the length of the other two. say a is 3 and b is 4. 32 is 9 and 42 is 12. 9 + 12 = 25. 52 = 25 so c is 5.

a2 + b2 = c2

c2 - b2 = a2

c2 - a2 = b2

Converse of Pythagorean Theorem?

The Pythagorean Theorem allows the mathematician to determine the value of the hypotenuse. The converse of the Pythagorean Theorem manipulates the formula so that the mathematician can use the values to determine that if the triangle is a right triangle.
