The metric system has two commonly used measures of mass. The first is the gram (g), and the other is the SI standardized unit of kilogram (kg). 1000 g equals 1 kilogram, and 1 g is .001 kg. Mass is the amount of matter in a sample, and it should not be confused with weight, which is a force (F). The SI unit for F is derived through mass is the Newton (N).

Milligram and Gram.

Answer 2

Yes, the above but the gram is the basic unit and like all metric measurements has prefixes added to make the unit larger or smaller. So, a milligram is 1/1000th of a gram, a kilogram is 1000 grams, a decigram is 100th of a gram, a decagram is 100 grams, etc, etc.

Answer

It depends on what you mean by the 'metric system'. If you mean the 'SI system', then the base unit for mass is the kilogram. If, on the other hand, you are referring to one of the earlier metric systems, the cgsA system, then the base unit for mass is the gram.

The gram (g) is the basic metric unit of mass.

The base unit of mass in the metric/SI system is the kilogram (kg). When the system was first developed it was based on the gram being the mass of one millilitre of water. As the system developed this definition became more and more unsuitable. Because the kilogram has the prefix kilo- and double prefixes aren't used, the normal prefixes are used as if the gram were still the base unit. The standard kilogram is a cylindrical block of platinum stored in Paris, but there are plans to redefine the kilogram in terms of the effect on a wire of passing an electric current through it between two magnets. The current will set up a magnetic field around the wire which is repulsed by the other magnets.

The unit of mass in the metric system is the gram. You can adjust that with the metric prefixes. A kilogram = 1000 grams, a milligram = 0,001 gram. and so on.
