How do you become an automotive mechanic?

first you study automotive. you can also work in an automotive field. most automotive type jobs (i.e. kragen, autozone, jiffylube, napa,) will start you out as an apprentice. if you don't want to do that, then collage is another way to go. most collages have A.S.E. certified classes. If you pass the classes, then you can attempt the A.S.E. certification tests, the problem is you MUST have two years experience to test (and have proof to show) or you cannot even register for the tests. Both work and college apart or combined will work. I tried to take my tests before I had two years and was promptly denied. If you have any more automotive questions I'll try to answer them for you, if you like. I took me three years to become a mechanic so I know about most of the hard ships.

How to Become ASE Certified?

ASE certification is an important way for consumers to know their automotive needs are being met by a qualified mechanic. Until 1972, there was no group able to set standards by which to measure a mechanic’s knowledge of their craft. In 1972 the National Institute or Automotive Service Excellence was established. The ASE is a non-profit group that sets the standards and certifies mechanics in their chosen trade. There are specific requirements that must be met by a mechanic looking to receive ASE certification. ASE tests and certifies mechanics in all aspects of the automotive service industry including fleet service, service station, automotive dealership service centers and truck service. For any mechanic to receive certification they must provide proof of at least two years of trade experience and pass one or more of dozens of exams available from the ASE. There are approximately 40 exams offered by the ASE for prospective mechanics. Once a mechanic passes at least one of the exams in their chosen field, and provides the required work experience, the ASE certifies the mechanic. Their certification does have an unlimited time span; the mechanic must retest every five years in order to maintain certification. In order to provide the most national coverage for mechanics, and require the least amount of travel, the ASE offers exams twice per year at over 700 locations around the country. There are also computer based tests offered twice per year at an additional 200 locations around the country. As an industry standard, according to the ASE, one in three test takers will fail their exam. This statistic is a good example of how knowledgeable a mechanic must be in order to receive certification. There are several reasons why a practicing mechanic would want to receive ASE certification. One of the most important reasons is the appeal an ASE mechanic has for potential employers and consumers. The blue and white patch on a mechanic’s uniform is a comforting guarantee to a consumer that their vehicle is going to be serviced by a knowledgeable professional.

Three Reasons To Start an Automotive Repair Career?

When selecting a career path, a person should look in the direction of things they enjoy. For the majority of men (and some women), this hobby includes working on vehicles. By taking their knowledge and experience under the hood, they stand a great chance of having a successful automotive repair career. There are several reasons why someone should work to make fixing cars into a career instead of a hobby, however three reasons dominate the list.EnjoymentOne of the main reasons an individual starts an automotive repair career is simply for enjoyment. Perhaps the enjoyment comes from satisfaction from starting their own business. Or maybe it comes from being able to help friends and family with any of their automotive repair needs. If asked, most mechanics will state that their enjoyment comes from being able to make a living with their favorite hobby.Another type of enjoyment comes from knowing that they can take a broken or non-working item, such as a car or truck, and make it function like new. Giving life to something that would otherwise end up in the junk yard leaves the mechanic with great satisfaction.Financial ReasonsThe price to get a car repaired is not cheap. But when compared to the price of a new vehicle, that cost is one that many people are willing to pay to be back on the roads. Although being a mechanic isn't as lucrative as being a doctor, it is financially rewarding. Depending on how busy a mechanic is, he can easily earn upwards of several thousand dollars a week. Of course, this varies depending on his location, clients and experience.Job SecurityAs the saying goes: If they make it, it will break. That is very true when it comes to vehicles. As long as companies continue to make vehicles that are made to be replaced within a certain amount of years, there will always be a demand for someone to fix them when things start going bad. Therefore, in steps the mechanic. With training and the knowledge of how vehicles work, he can bring new life to a vehicle and extend the life it. Otherwise, it would end up in a junkyard. To the mechanic, this is called job security and is one reason why starting an automotive repair career is a great route to go.
