Example: If you are drawing something that is 10 feet wide, to keep it scale you can draw it 10 inches wide thus one inch represents one foot. The same could be said for mileage scaled down or conversely a schematic of electronics that is enlarged and one inch on the drawing may represent one millimeter in reality.
