"What does an equation equal ?" is a meaningless question.

One can more meaningfully ask "What is the solution to this equation ?"

The 'solution' of an equation is the number that the variable (the letter) must be

in order to make the equation true.

6y - 7 - 4y + 2 = 0

Combine the 'y' terms on the left side:

2y - 7 + 2 = 0

Combine the numerical terms on the left side:

2y - 5 = 0

Add 5 to each side of the equation:

2y = 5

Divide each side by 2:

y = 2.5
