A factor of a whole number, call it n, is any other whole number, call it a, for which another whole number, b, exists such that a times b equals n. For example, the factors of 8 are 1, 2, 4, and 8. The factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12.

This definition extends naturally to any ring.
