Cost often means minus (note this is for the customer buying something; if it is an employee selling something, it would be addition). For an example of a customer, "Sarah had $30 and the pair of headphones she boughtcost $20, how much does she have left?" In this case, the equation would be set up like: 30-20=... Sarah would have had $10 left in the situation. Here is an example for an employee, "A manager in a store is in charge of the cash register. The cash register already has $100 in it and a customer buys a set of headphones that cost $20, How much does the manager have?" This equation would be set up like this: 100+20=... and this would equal 120.
