What does modest means mean?

"Modest means" defines a person's financial condition. For example, "He/She is a man/woman of modest means." Such a statement indicates the person is not wealthy, but rather that their income is quite modest, possibly substandard. "Modest means" has nothing to do with a person's achievements or abilities. The first answer better defines only the word "modest" as noted: A modest person is unwilling to draw attention to his own achievements or abilities and might answer enthusiastic comments about his work, such as, "That looks amazing!" with the response, "Nah, it looks okay." However, such a response probably only indicates false humility. A truly modest person would possibly respond, "Thank you, but like Michael Angelo said, I am still learning."
