Your 4WD is currently not working. There has been some problems with late model GM trucks 4WD. Some are related to the pushbutton switch on the dash. My 02 silverado was warrantied by dealer because of a bad dash switch. This just happened to me. I was told to check the fuse first, if it wasn't blown it would be in the switch. Sure enough the fuse was blown...replaced and now working fine. same thing happened to my 03 silverado 2500hd. its the 4wd actuator switch. i think there is a bulletin on this.

Most 4WD vehicles use automatically locking hubs. By engaging 4WD, a vacuum is formed in the front wheel hubs causing them to lock up into the front differential/transaxle so they can receive power through the transmission. If the seals are leaking, then the vacuum will not form and 4WD will not work. As for the light not working, I suspect that different models use the 4WD indicator light on the console to either identify when the front differential/transaxle is engaged or when the front wheels are actually engaged. Not having the light on when attempting to engage 4WD can either mean problems with the front locking hub mechanisms or the front differential.

The 4wd is automatic in the 1992 Subaru Legacy Wagons. There is an empty fuse under the hood that has a cover that says FWD that can be used to disable the 4wd and force it to be in front wheel drive, but by default, there should not be a fuse in it. When there is a fuse in the FWD connector, the dashboard will have a warning light that says FWD, indicating that you do not have 4wd enguaged. If the light is not lit and you do not have 4wd then you have a transmission issue that will likey need the expertise of a transmission specialist. Check the transmission error codes (as opposed the the standard engine error codes.) They will likely help you pinpoint the problem.
