x2 + y2 isn't an equation. Until you say it's equal to something, it's just an

expression, and its numerical value depends on the values of 'x' and 'y'.

If you say that the expression is equal to some number, the it's the equation

of a circle, with its center at the origin, and a radius equal to the square root

of the number.
