You can think of a factor as a number that divides another number with no remainder.

For example, 3 is a factor of 6 since 3 goes into 6 two times with no remainder.

Now if the factor is prime, then it is a prime factor.

So in the example above, 3 is a prime factor. This is because the factor itself has only two factors, 1 and itself. 6 goes into itself also, but since 6 is not prime, it is not a prime factor.

Now that you understand it, here is a more precise definition.

A prime factor is a factor that is a Prime number. In other words, one of the prime numbers that, when multiplied, give the original number.

Prime factorization is to write a multiplication problem like 6 times 2 in its simplest form with all prime numbers. so 6 is composite 3 times 2 is six so then it would be 3 times 2 times 2 and it would still give you the some answer of 12

A prime factorization is when you have a number and find the two numbers that can be multiplied together to make the number and reduce the number and ya. Here is an example: 20 is your #. Your prime factorization would be 2x2x5 because if u multiply those numbers you will get 20.

There now you should know.

A Prime number can only be factored by itself or one.

There are no other numbers that be 'extracted ' from it.

An example of a prime number is '23'. It has no other factors , other than '23', and '1'.
