For a positive integer value n, "to the power of" n means the number multiplied by itself n times. "To the power of n" is also defined for negative, rational, irrational and complex n, but all that is not required now.

So 5 to the power of 9 is 5*5*5*5*5*5*5*5*5 [that is, 9 lots of 5]. This is normally written as 59

So 59 = 5*5*5*5*5*5*5*5*5 = 25*5*5*5*5*5*5*5 = 125*5*5*5*5*5*5 = 625*5*5*5*5*5 = 3125*5*5*5*5 = 15625*5*5*5 = 78125*5*5 = 390625*5 and that is 1953125.
