We can set up a proportion to figure this out. We can take 10 and put it over 100 (10/100) since 100 is the highest number for percent. It will be 10/100=x/5.99 (X will be your answer). Then we multiply across. 10 X 5.99=59.9, and 100 times X=100X. Now the problem should look like 59.9=100X. Now we divide by 100 (not 100X) on both sides. 100X/100 the two hundreds will cancel out, however X will remain there because you just divided by 100 and not 100X. 59.9/100=0.599.

X=0.599.

Now to figure 10% off (like a discount at a store), we must subtract the percentage from the original amount. So 5.99 - 0.599 = 5.391. Rounded to nearest cent is 5.39
