A half is 1/2. The numerator is 1 and the denominator is 2.

The numerator and denominator can both be multiplied by the same number and the result will equivalent to a half although it will be a different fraction.

So 1/2 = 2/4 = 3/6 = 4/8 = 5/10........and so on

1/2 = 4/8

so 7/8 = 4/8 + 3/8

As 8/8 (or 2/2, 3/3, 4/4 etc) = 1, then 7/8 = 1 - 1/8

7/8 is therefore 1/8 less than 1 but is 3/8 more than 1/2.
