A base is just the "bottom" of a shape. Shapes are in three dimensional shape, so if they are rotated around, it can sometimes be hard to say exactly what the base is.

For example, the base of a triangle can be ANY one of the three sides.

It's best to pick a base which is perpendicular (i.e., forms a 90 degree angle) with the height. Otherwise, you'll have to use more trigonometry to solve simple equations like, Area = (1/2) b x h
