It is roughly the distance light travels in one year, a common way to measure the distance to objects outside of our solar system.

How is light years used in science measurement?

A light year is the distance light travels in a year. That is roughly 6,000,000,000,000 miles (six trillion miles). Thus such a unit is used only to measure the largest distances, those between stars and galaxies.

Approximately how many miles is one light-year?

Do the math. Light travels at 186,000 miles per second. There are 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour, 24 hours in a day, and 365.26 days in a year. Just multiply all those numbers together. It's a pretty big number.

How Far Away Are Star?

Every star is a different distance. The distances are SO GREAT that we don't even measure them in miles - we measure them in light years, the distance light travels in a period of 365 days (almost six trillion miles)!! It's CRAZY !! The nearest star that we know of other than the Sun is about 4 light-years away.

When will all the planets line up in a line?

The chances of the planets ever lining up are so statistically improbable that it is safe to say it will never happen. The actual chances of the planets ever lining up has been calculated to be about once every 8.6 x 1046 years. (That's once every 86 billion, trillion, trillion, trillion years.) Since the Sun will be gone in about 10 billion years, it is impossible for this to happen.

What is the significance of the stars?

people call it a star but really it is supposed to be a shield (thats why its called the magain David) it was the shape of davids shield, the six points were to protect the head, shoulders, thighs and groin
