In the process of addition, an "addend" (addendum) is a number that is added to another. Historically, the term augend was used for the number to which an addend was being added, but today the term is often applied to either number in the equation.

The corresponding numbers for subtraction, which is not commutative, are called the minuend (beginning value) and the subtrahend (taken away).
