It is a distance around a shape, example:

Say I have a square in my hands well...you should know that a square has equal sides, right? Each side of that square I have is 4 centimeters so all you do is add up all the sides. Like....4cm+4cm+4cm+4cm=16cm.That is what the perimeter is of THIS square! So basically it's the sum of all the sides of a shape.
Perimeter is the sum of all of the sides of a shape.

Another way of looking at it is, the perimeter is the distance around an object, if you travel along the "walls".

If you go outside to one corner of your house, and walk around the house right along the wall, you have walked the perimeter of the house.
