as far as I know, Alaska is probably the coldest state in the us. That depends on if you are looking also with the added wind chill. In the 1990's "Top of the World" Barrow, Alaska had a fierce wind storm-bringing the daily temperature down to nearly -100 degrees Fahrenheit. Down at the bottom of Alaska, the kenai peninsula, the winter of 2008 had recorded temperatures of -30 and far below.

The desert southwest (parts of Arizona, Nevada, and California) routinely are over 100 degrees, often 110 degrees, and at times over 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
