Which one of the following things is least like the others poem novel painting statue flower?

This question was most likely from a poorly designed IQ test. This is one reason I don't like many IQ test questions, they are often subjective and only if you think like the question designer will you get it right. In some cases you could even be penalized for having a more complex brain and/or higher order thinking - which is the exact opposite of the test's objective. In this case it might seem like "flower" is the obvious answer since all of the other choices are "man made objects" while a flower is not. Everyone I have asked this question to has almost immediately said "flower". However the "obvious" answer is often wrong when it comes to IQ test questions (especially if the questions are arranged in an order of increasing difficultly and you are looking at one of the questions from the second half of the test). "Novel" is the answer the test designer may be looking for. Why? All of the others are considered forms of art/beauty, but a novel is "different" and you are looking for what is least like the others. Novel is also the ONLY word in the list that can be used as both noun and adjective. They stick poem and novel together at the beginning to throw you off because obviously a poem and a novel are similar in some ways (things written on paper by people) so you immediately assume neither of those could be the correct answer. Similarly they stick flower on the end to give it extra attention, the test taker immediately thinks "that must be the one!" because none of the others jumped out as obvious choices and flower is the last one. Then again, you could probably come up with a reasonable explanation for choosing any of the items in the list... poem is the shortest word in the list, painting is the longest and the only one that DOES NOT have two vowels, statue is the only one that ends in a vowel. Statue is also the only one that is designed to last indefinitely outdoors in the elements and if you rearrange the letters you get "astute" which could be a clue, haha. You might be tempted to pick painting because its the only one that can be used as a verb, but this is wrong, both painting and flower can be verbs, this gives even more strength to the case for "novel" as the correct choice because it is the only one that can be used as an adjective. The point is that you could do almost endless analysis, and in fact a person with a very high IQ is probably more likely to pick something different than the question designer intended. This is why the question is completely worthless when it comes to measuring intelligence.
