== The mercalli scale also known as the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale is a measure of the ground shaking from earthquakes. It is based on how people perceive earthquake shaking and/or the damage caused by an earthquake. Modified Mercalli Intensity is measured at individual locations so one earthquake can have many different measures of MMI. MMI is measured on a scale of 1 to 12 (actually Roman numerals) with 1 corresponding to the slightest shaking and 12 reflecting the strongest earthquake. MMI is not the same as earthquake magnitude which is a single measure of the amount of energy released by an earthquake.

The Modified Mercalli Scale indicates the intensity of an earthquake.

It is in part a measure of the damage done to buildings or other objects by earthquakes. It ranges from very few people feeling slight vibrations under very favorable circumstances (I) to total destruction of everything standing (XII).

The scale also indicates the perceived intensity of ground shaking based on the opinions of witnesses as to the severity of the felt ground movement.

In order to attempt to quantify the Mercalli scale and decrease it's reliance on the subjective opinion of witnesses, the USGS also include data of measured ground accelerations taken from seismometers in the formulation of the Mercalli value.

The Mercalli scale allocates a value to an earthquake based on the perceived shaking in a specific area as well as the damage to buildings and infrastructure that has occurred. The US Geological survey also use data based on the amplitudes of seismic waves and surface accelerations as measured on seismometers to quantify "perceived shaking".

Mercalli Scale is a method of determining the severity of earthquakes. It will classify the earthquakes from a range of one, meaning the lowest and would only be detected using instruments, up to twelve which will cause almost total destruction.
