A Japanese apartment style in which there is only one small room (usually 110 sq ft) and usually a tiny bathroom. It is similar to a "studio".

These styles of units are most often rented by single individuals due to their extremely small size. Most of Japan's city apartments have rooms such as these although family units (650 to 970 sq ft in size) are more common, especially in Japan's suburbs.

I lived in Japan for a little while and it honestly depends. There are some houses that are two to three stories tall, but they're more narrow than wide. The houses that I stayed in were normally three or more bedrooms, with an average kitchen and livingroom. Apartments aren't very large. There's usually one or two bedrooms, a small kitchen, a small toilet area with a small bathing area, and a small laundry area. Compared to the houses in Canada, I think the average house in Japan is a little smaller, but not by much.
