Every number can be broken down to prime factors which when times together equal your original number.

12=3*2*2 How did I work that out? Well 6*2=12. 2 is prime so I can ignore it for now. 6= 2*3. 2 and 3 are also prime so I can stop. So the prime numbers that I got were 2,2,3. To check if this is right I can times them together to see what they equal. 2*2=4 4*3=12 Therefore 12=2*2*3 or 12= 2squared*3

Another example for you;

54=9*6. 9=3*3. 6=2*3

54=2*3*3*3
