There is actually no specific formula to subtract fractions but rather a method to accomplish this. First you have to obtain a common denominatior between the two fractions in order to subtract. This is easiest when you just multiply the denominators.

If you have 1/4 and 1/9 you multiply the denominator to have a common one. This would give us 36. then you would have to multiply the numerators by the number you multiplied the denominator.

This means that 1/4 would become 9/36 because you multiplied the bottom by 9 in order to get 36. You can check to see if you did this right by simplifying the fraction and seeing if you got your original fraction. Once you have these new common fractions you simply subtract the numerators and put them over the common denominator.

9/36 - 4/36 = 5/36 which cannot be simplified

Can subscripts in a chemical formula be fractions?

The Subscripts in a Chemical formula explain how the atoms in that compound are chemically bonded. As a fraction of an atom cannot bond, the subscripts cannot be fractions. Coefficients, however which go before a chemical formula in chemical equations may be fractions. This is because they explain the ratio of the number of moles of each species required for the reaction and it is possible to have a fraction of a mole of something. Is there a shortcut key for fractions?

Not in Excel. Excel does not use fractions. If you need to use fractions, then turn them into decimals. You can represent 1/2 in excel with the formula =1/2.

-6 1 2 plus -1 3 10?

The answer would be -7 4/5. First convert the mixed numbers into fractions. Then use the algebraic formula for addition of fractions: a/b + c/d = (ad + bc) / bd. Last, reduce the fractions.

What is the formula in dividing fractions?

There is no formula for dividing fractions, but there is a way of doing it. When you a fraction divided by another fraction like below... 1/2 divided by 4/7.... Swap the second fraction around and then multiply like this... 1/2 multiplied by 7/4.... And when multiplying fractions, multiply the numerators (top number) together, and the denominators (bottom number) together (1x7)/(2x4) = 7/8 Simple

What is the rules of subtracting integers?

if substracting by two negatives your going to add ex: -2-(-5) it would be positive 7. if your substracting with two differ numbers it you would substract and take the sign the sign of the biggest number.ex: 2+(-3) it would be-1 sice 3 is bigger than2 you take the sign of 3

What is formula for multiplying mixed fractions?

Two methods: (1) Convert the mixed fractions to improper fractions first. This is generally the easier method. (2) Use the distributive property. For example, 2 x 3 1/3 = 2 x (3 + 1/3) = 2 x 3 + 2 x 1/3 = 6 + 2/3 = 6 2/3.
