To work out the lowest common multiple of two or more numbers we need to resolve each number to its prime factors.

Then, we can multiply those factors together to give us the lowest common multpile.

The factors of 4 are 2, 2

The factors of 4 are 2, 3

To be a multiple of 4, the lowest common multiple must have 2 and 2 in its list

to be a multiple of 4, the lowest common multiple must have 2 and 3 in its list

So, starting with the 4 we have (2, 2)

As there is already a 2 in the mix, when we come to the 6 we only need to add the 3 making our list (2, 2, 3)

If we multiple all these numbers together we get 12.

4 x 3 = 12

6 x 2 = 12
