There is no "normal" amount. You should have at lest one good friend though, but there is no real upper limit, except as dictated by how many people you TRULY have time for. For example, if someone says they have 100 GOOD (close) friends, they are lying to you or to themselves - there aren't enough hours in the day or days in the week...
I would hazard a guess that for most people in their later life, AFTER high school (when you might have more friends), the AVERAGE number would be two or three VERY GOOD friends, then another 10 fairly good friends and lots of acquaintances (30-100 or more!)
