The smallest marsupial is the Long-tailed Planigale. It is 55 to 65 millimetres, without the tail, which is the same length as its body. It weighs 4.2 grams, although the largest specimens have been recorded at 6 grams. It lives in Australia's Top End and the Kimberley region of Western Australia.

Almost as small is the ningaui. Both ningauis and planigales are members of the carnivorous marsupial family known as dasyurids.

The smallest species of wallaby is the Tammar wallaby (macropus eugenii), with an average weight of about 8kg. It is most common on Kangaroo Island, off the southern coast of the state of South Australia. It is also known as the Dama, Pamma, or Darma wallaby.
